Building a great resume

Our main focus is assisting you in your internship/job search and helping you to properly market yourself to potential employers.

Without a great resume, you will not even get an invitation to interview. We feel strongly in focusing much effort on a quality resume. So let’s begin with The Resume.

Writing a good Cover Letter

If you are not responding to a job posting that specifies a contact name, try to determine the appropriate person to whom you should address your cover letter.

Try to contact the head of the department in which you’re interested. This will be easiest in mid-sized and small companies, where the head of the department in likely to have an active role in the initial screening.

Building a great E-Portfolio

If you are looking for an internship or job and want to stand out from the other students or recent graduates, consider creating a Career e-Portfolio (CP).

Having a CP use to be a rarity and packed a wow-factor punch with the hiring manager. Nowadays, not having one could get you eliminated from the shortlist in the working world.

PROFESSIONAL IMAGE CENTER

The Office of Career & Professional Development offers this professional image experience on campus for all Bethany College students.

The Professional Image Center (PIC) is located in Morlan Hall, room 13. Through the PIC, students will be able to receive assistance with professional photographs, attire, etiquette, and resumes.

Negotiating

Here are many hurdles to clear on your path to getting your dream job, at a dream salary. However, there's one barrier that consistently stands in the way of your prize, and can upend your strategy before you even get out of the starting gate:

Why would a company force you to reveal private financial information? Is that legal? How can they judge your worth before even meeting you? Shouldn’t they be the ones that have a budget in mind already?
